2. (0:39) "Heaven and Hell"
© 1971 J. Entwistle/The Who (BMI)
In the 1970's, The Who exploded onto stage with "Heaven and Hell." Live at Leeds and The Isle of Wight Festival are excellent examples of this thunderous entry. We pay homage to the legacy of the group and their massive influence on us and rock history. Though you wouldn't hear this one on "Tommy" or "Quadrophenia", we've found a home for it here in "The Elemental Switch".
The song springs to life, and at once, the universe is divided. The Robot Field Recorder, just the same - wielding godly powers - can go either way. And it does. A spy machine at the mercy of its pilot.
Can we have eternal life?

Nighttime. A silhouette races the rural highway. Light beaming from the faceplate scans the curvatures in the roads, hillsides, and star formations.
The light in the faceplate begins flickering like a shot neon bulb. And with the suit’s power cells drained and sensors out - the lights of an oncoming truck...
Lyrics
Stretching miles and miles and miles of road…
tracking the stars in the moonlight’s glow.
Robot Field Recorder lights my life,
but it drags me underground out of sight!
4. (5:31) "The Wave"
© 2017 J. DeNicolais, Noel Di Tosto
The end of a story. A Eulogy. Life as a wave - rising and falling.
Lyrics
With the book closed, all is said,
and the story comes to rest.
Never know how high the wave
till the day you see its crest.

In this life, there are many fields:
Fields of wheat
Corn fields
Star fields
Fields of knowledge
Fields of sound
Fields of light
Battle fields
Magnetic fields
Quantum fields
Gravity fields
And One field that encompasses them all.
We restart here, in a place near and dear to the heart, on “The Fields of Affection”.

Chapter 2 Field Notes:
The words here describe a diagram you can sketch on a piece of paper.
This record is a journal - Artistic, Scientific, Public, Personal with revelations laced in the artwork, sleeves, and recordings.
"The Fields of Affection" is an origin story - the spark of a protagonist's life.
Lyrics
Verse 1:
Got your life on a jagged line.
You come in on the mountain screaming;
then you're down the valley pines.
Tight on the left! and loose on the right.
If you could be anywhere, be in the middle with me tonight...
On the fields of affection - you shine!
Chorus:
This is where we begin:
In the heart of a wave, in the silence we spin.
And before the light fades, I pray…
We will stay… and shine!
Verse 2:
Histories playing out on an old time radio.
Put 'em on a timeline and watch 'em ebb and watch 'em flow.
'Cause love never changes - see the highs and feel the lows;
as one love comes crashing in, sure another by the wayside goes...
…on the fields of affection, we shine!
Chorus:
This is where we begin:
In the heart of a wave, in the silence we spin.
And before the light fades, I pray…
We will stay… and shine!
Outro:
Stand up and send your love to me!
Stand up and send your love to me!
Stand up and send your love to me…
Chapter 3: The Traveler

Chapter 3 Field Notes:
We travelled time - surfing sound waves, and committed the places we went to on tape. These are the field recordings.
Close your eyes and be transported. The music will carry you.
A seashell will also take you places - no matter where you are. Hold it to your ear and listen to the rush of waves in the ocean. Memories flood in of trips to the beach and building sand castles. These shells are records, scattered about the shores, holding secrets of the Past, Present and Future.
But what else are they whispering? Shhhhh….. There’s something more...

Lyrics
Verse 1:
Say you want to come along, Love.
Fall asleep by the sea side.
Staring out on the high tide,
I glance your way and catch you smiling.
…and catch you smiling,
...I feel your heart racing!
Chorus:
All these moments stand alone.
I'm a traveler with places to go.
Be my companion, share my throne!
at my side till time takes us back where we started
...all of worlds we've seen
Verse 2:
You take it slow; then you fall in.
A leap of faith gets you all in.
Quick now the window's closing!
Oh you can't let this pass you by!
Chorus:
All these moments stand alone.
I'm a traveler with places to go.
Be my companion, share my throne!
at my side till time takes us back where we started
…footprints still in the sand.
Bridge:
La la la la la la (x4)
Ooo… Oooo (x2)
...We're back where we started!
Is that a smile I see?

Chapter 4: Field Notes
Joy and simplicity. Youth and innocence.
Before the weight of the world.
Lyrics
Verse 1:
We loosened all our ties,
Oh now what a relief
with the hot sun beating down.
Well, it’s so hard for me to believe - summertime has finally come around!
Verse 2:
Send for the waiters, the umbrellas, and the seas
The last ones to make it will make castles on the beach
with the sands from the hourglass
that we turned on its side so that time could not pass.
Verse 3:
If we could stop time – we could stop it now!
And live our lives in tropical dreams
With our souls in the virgin daiquiris
welcoming the cool noon breeze.

Chapter 5:
When We Were Young/
Just One Fish in the Sea
"When We Were Young/ Just One Fish in the Sea"

Chapter 5: Field Notes
"When We Were Young" opens with a nod to The Clash, and moves into something new. There’s punk in us. And Motown too.
Who is Sally? Is she long and tall? A figment of Noel’s imagination? Surely revered - she is a goddess, worshipped at the altar of youth.
We know her name but not her face. And still, the love she made is here - now - in this mantra cast in the waves.

Lyrics
Verse 1:
When we were young,
we danced on moonbeams.
You shook our hands,
You walked away
From the other side
Towards the day
When we were young, we danced our lives away…
Chorus:
Sally let your hair hang down
Everything is turned around!
You never needed us that way
We look to you, why don’t you stay?
Verse 2:
From the first days of our lives
We woke up with love in our eyes
Everyone is with you now
Take their hands; don’t let them down
Pour your golden soul into
the way you walk; the way you move!
It’s in your eyes; beneath your feet
Till the next day when we will meet…
Chorus:
Sally let your hair hang down
Everything is turned around
You never needed us that way
We look to you, why don’t you stay?
Sally pull your soul in two
one of me and one of you.
There’s one last thing I’ve got to do
And don’t you know?
Bridge:
Don’t let me down, don’t let us down
Sally in your arms we’ll find security…
Don’t let me down, don’t let us down
Sally in your arms we’ll find security…
Verse 3:
Now that we’re old,
Everything seems to move so much slower
But you still wake with me
And we will always be
definite infinity
Sally you and me…
Chorus:
Sally let your hair hang down
Everything is turned around!
You never needed us that way
We look to you, why don’t you stay?
Sally pull your soul in two
one of me and one of you
There’s one last thing I’ve got to do
And don’t you know?...
(Outro/Mantra)
Just one fish in the sea is all you really need.
Please believe me when I say:
“One hook will set you free.”
Telling old wives’ tales
of bringing home white whales;
the fisherman’s fables are wearing frail…
Cast them on the water to another shore.
Just one fish in the sea
Just one fish in the sea…
Just one fish in the sea is all you really need
Please believe me when I say:
“One hook will set you free.”
Telling old wives’ tales
of bringing home white whales;
the fisherman’s fables are wearing frail…
Cast them on the water to another shore.

Chapter 6: Never Said Goodbye
"Never Said Goodbye"
Music and Lyrics: © 2007 J. DeNicolais, N. Di Tosto
Chapter 6: Field Notes
We’re traveling time again on the wings of words and melodies. “When We Were Young” took us in reverse from the 1970’s to the 1960’s - and now we find ourselves another decade back in the 1950’s - at the genesis of Rock and Roll. “Never Said Goodbye” keeps the promise made in “The Fields of Affection”: Histories playing out on an old time radio. Put ‘em on a timeline and watch them ebb and watch ‘em flow. ‘Cause love never changes - see the highs and feel the lows. As one Love comes crashing in, sure another by the wayside goes...
“Never Said Goodbye” is the soundtrack to a scene. It’s narrating the scene - and it’s being played by the band in the dance hall as the story unfolds.
Lyrics
Verse 1:
A warm summer night -
The stars were hanging in the sky
You turned and looked,
Oh you caught my eye
But the cat caught my tongue
An' let you pass me by.
At the dance hall, later on
I watched you swaying to his song.
Our shadows entwined,
I was yours; you were mine.
But your blush turned cold in the spotlight
Chorus:
Under pressure, crushed at at teenage heights
No surrender;
Love at first sight!
The boys all want you, yeah... See the sparks fly!
No, I never said goodbye.
Verse 2:
Wallflowers dreaming in heat,
praying white knights will come sweep them off of their feet.
Got their Hands trembling.
Love's such a distant relief;
you can hear the cavalry drawing near…
Back at home your daddy's sitting tight
with his shotgun ready and cocked up for the fight.
He's got his glass of whiskey and wildflowers
No one's gonna hurt his girl tonight.
All them cowboys…
Chorus:
Under pressure, crushed at at teenage heights
No surrender
Love at first sight
We all want you, yeah... see the sparks fly!
No, I never said goodbye.
Bridge:
The fire turned the tide.
Swore I'd be at your side.
The thieves rode in with hearts held high,
Their Trophies wielded to the sky.
I couldn't stand there idly by;
My fists of glass let wildly fly!
And through the smoke, the mayhem spied
The boy I was had all but died!
They lit me up and they spit my pride;
the sirens and the flashing lights.
Miranda read the Mountie rights
and dragged me from my girl that night.
The highwayman threw me aside,
and I ran for miles and miles to hide,
but I never, no I never, no I never; I never said goodbye!
Verse 3:
Breaking through the firing line,
You swore our love was not a crime.
Pray for me and do the time!
And I’ll see you on the other side!
And through all of this,
Never said goodbye.
No I never - never said goodbye.
I still want you!
See my sparks fly!
No, I never said goodbye…
Oooohh…
